Lift Up Your Eyes And See
John 4:31-42
Key Verse 35
“Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”
- Summarize what has happened up to this point in John 4:1-31, specifically what did Jesus do? What did the woman do in verses 28-30?
- Look at vs. 31-34. While Jesus’ disciples were urging Jesus to eat, what was taking place? What was Jesus’ response to their request for Him to eat food? What is the “food” Jesus was speaking of? What is the will of him who sent Jesus? What is his work?
- Look at verse 35. What did Jesus redirect the disciples' attention to? What does it mean that “the fields are white for harvest”? What does this statement imply about our roles and the work we are to be doing? Why is it important to be aware of the timing of the harvest? How might the disciples’ focus on eating food have caused them to miss the work that Jesus was doing and the work that they should be doing?
- Look at vs. 36-38. What does the one who reaps the harvest receive? Why is it important to reap and receive wages and fruits for eternal life? What does the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ mean? What did Jesus send the disciples/us to do? What does it mean to enter into another’s labor?
- Look at vs. 39-42. How do the events in these verses show what sowing and reaping in the harvest field could look like? What could it mean to sow? What could it mean to reap? How might the sower and reaper rejoice together?
