It Is I; Do Not Be Afraid
John 6:16-21
Key Verse 20: “But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
- Look at verses 16-18. What were Jesus’ disciples doing and where were they going? Describe the scene: How might the disciples have felt?
- Look at verse 19. What did the disciples see? Why do you think they were frightened when they saw Jesus? Why do you think Jesus chose to walk on the sea and come near the boat? How was Jesus able to walk on the sea? What does walking on the sea symbolize and tell us about Jesus?
- Look at verse 20. Consider what Jesus said: “It is I; do not be afraid.” What does this statement mean to you? What significance and power comes with this statement?
- Look at verse 21. How did the disciple’s change after Jesus spoke to them? What did the disciples do with Jesus? What happened to them after they took Jesus into the boat?
- How can today’s passage be applied to the situations and storms of our lives today?
Note: The disciples were rowing from Tiberius to Capernaum
1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias.
17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum.
