¬¬¡Ä¡"'Well done, my good servant!' his master replied. 'Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'
¬¬¡Ä¡This passage helps us to have the perspective of what we ought to do in the year to come and beyond.
¬¬¡Ä¡1. ¡¡Read v. 11. What prompted Jesus to give them this parable?
¬¬¡Ä¡** two reasons:
¬¬¡Ä¡1) He gave this parable because he reached the point in time when his role (in serving the redemptive purpose) is finished and our role is to begin.
¬¬¡Ä¡2) He gave this parable because people ignored the purpose of God's calling for them, that is, their blessed mission to live as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
¬¬¡Ä¡2. ¡¡Read vs. 12©13 and describe what Jesus might have had in mind when he employed the following expressions:
¬¬¡Ä¡¡¡1) ¡¡"a man of noble birth"; ¡¡
¬¬2) ¡¡went to "a distant country";
¬¬3) ¡¡to have him appointed "a king" and then to "return";
¬¬4) ¡¡So he called ten of his servants;
¬¬5) ¡¡and gave them "ten minas";
¬¬6) ¡¡"put this money to work" he said; and
¬¬7) ¡¡"until I come back."
¬¬¡Ä¡** 1) a man of noble birth = Jesus
¬¬¡Ä¡2) went to a distant country = went to his Father's house
¬¬¡Ä¡3) to have him appointed a king and then to return = Jesus will come back a second time, not to fill a servant's position but to rule as the King of kings, Lord of lords.
¬¬¡Ä¡4) "ten of his servants": ten is a complete number, referring to all who believe in Jesus.
¬¬¡Ä¡5) "ten minas": again, ten is a complete number, but this time it is referring to all kinds of resources which God had made available to us Christians to use in serving the mission from Him. Notice that Jesus does not say that the noble man gave each servant one mina. Rather he said that he gave ten minas to ten servants, indicating that we need to work together to pool all of our resources in order to generate the maximum results. Of course each person's talents are different, yet this should not excuse us from the duty to bear fruit using all kinds of means made available to us. Of all the means made available, the greatest is the gospel message. So by faith in this gospel we need to spread the word of God, knowing that we have this "treasure" in our bodies, the jars of clay.
¬¬2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all©surpassing power is from God and not from us.
¬¬¡Ä¡6) put this money to work: this indicates the need for us to serve the gospel, so that the gospel would work fully, for the gospel comes with the power to save what was lost.
¬¬Romans 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.
¬¬¡Ä¡7) until I come back: this means that in Jesus there is no such a thing as retirement. We need to work for Him until we breathe our last.
¬¬¡Ä¡3. ¡¡Read v. 14. Why do you think his subjects might have "hated" him so much (cf. Isaiah 55:8©9; Mark 8:34©38; John 7:7)?
¬¬¡Ä¡** 1) It is because they had their own ideas about the way of salvation. Mainly they wanted to save themselves according to their own efforts/ideas/means.
¬¬¡Ä¡2) They did not want to repent of their own sinful ways of life. They loved the world which is adulterous and wicked. They did not want to live according to what the Spirit desires.
¬¬¡Ä¡3) Mainly they were their own men, trying to run their own lives as their own kings.
¬¬¡Ä¡4. ¡¡Read v. 15. When do you think this will happen (cf. Daniel 12:1©3; Matthew 16:27; Romans 2:5©10; 2Co 5:10; Revelation 20:10©15)?
¬¬¡Ä¡** 1) This will happen when Jesus comes again after the times of the gentiles will have been fulfilled. Luke 21:24.
¬¬¡Ä¡2) On his second coming Jesus will judge first the living (meaning the saved ones) and second the dead (meaning those who died unbelieving).
¬¬¡Ä¡3) On his second coming Jesus will give a resurrected body to a saved soul, and then give a reward(s) according to what one has done while in the body.
¬¬¡Ä¡4) On his second coming, the dead (unsaved ones) however will not be given a resurrected body. They will still however have to stand before the judgment seat of Jesus to be judged and be directed to participate in the second death which is eternal death, only to burn in the fiery lake of burning sulfur, where they will have to be punished all according to what they have done while in the body.
¬¬¡Ä¡5. ¡¡Read vs. 16©19 and describe: 1) the good servant's secret of "success"; and 2) the rewards given to each of the "good" servants. Yet why is it not always easy for one to be trustworthy in a "very small" matter? How can we practically apply this "secret" to our life?
¬¬¡Ä¡** He was trustworthy in a very small matter.
¬¬¡Ä¡** 1) Words of compliment;
¬¬¡Ä¡2) The honor of being given greater responsibilities.
¬¬¡Ä¡** It is not always easy mainly because of the very reason built into the very words of Jesus, that is, the tendency to ignore what is very small. We love what is big, not what is small. But we must understand that what is big consists of what is small. Notice the double emphasis, that is, 'very' and 'small', indicating that Jesus wants us to pay attention to not just what is small but also 'very' small (like small sin, small responsibility, small sign, small act of obedience or disobedience, small number like 1 sheep, 1:1 bible study, 1 minute or second of prayer, 1 cent or dollar, etc. and so forth). Notice also the word "matter", indicating that in Jesus every little or small thing does "matter"; in Jesus nothing or no one does not matter.
¬¬¡Ä¡** We can apply it to our daily life by obeying God's will beginning with what is very small, obeying Him one step at a time, especially focusing on 1:1 ministry but with world mission in mind.
¬¬¡Ä¡6. ¡¡Read. vs. 20©26 and describe: 1) the real reason for the wicked servant's fruitlessness; 2) the blessing this servant forfeited; and 3) the master's wisdom in rejecting the objection filed by those standing by.
¬¬¡Ä¡** Real reason is his poor relationship with Jesus, which again is due to his poor understanding of who Jesus really is. Mainly he failed to understand the gracefulness of Jesus. He failed to take deep root in the love of Jesus.
¬¬John 14:15 "If you love me, you will obey what I command.
¬¬¡Ä¡** The opportunity to rule as co©heirs with Jesus.
¬¬Romans 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs©©heirs of God and co©heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
¬¬¡Ä¡** This is consistent with the so called 80 to 20 rule. That is, where 20 percent of your clients generate 80% of your income, you need to allocate 80% of your resources to the 20% of your clients.
¬¬¡Ä¡7. ¡¡Read v. 27. How is the category of people described in this verse different from the category of people described in vs. 15b©26? In what respect is the judgment that fell on the people described in this category surprising? Yet why is this verdict justified (cf. Revelation 5:4,9,12)?
¬¬¡Ä¡** The two categories are: 1) exhaustive, in that there are no other categories; and 2) mutually exclusive, indicating that you are either God's enemy or a God's servant.
¬¬¡Ä¡** It is surprising in two ways: 1) they thought that they would never face Jesus; and 2) the judgment is to be killed, meaning participating in eternal condemnation.
¬¬¡Ä¡** Three reasons: 1) Jesus shed his blood to pay for their sins, but they rejected him; 2) Jesus gave them the mission to live as a kingdom of priests and a holy nation; and 3) yet they ignored this grace and apostleship and lived as their own men.
