Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Matthew 26:31-46

He went a little farther. Then he fell with his face to the ground. He prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, take this cup of suffering away from me. But let what you want be done, not what I want.

Read verses 31-35.  What would cause Jesus’ disciples turn away from following him?  When would they follow him again?  How did Peter react to what Jesus said?

Read verses 36-39.  Why did Jesus go to Gethsemane?  Why was he sad and troubled in his soul?  What did Jesus pray?  What can we learn about Jesus from his prayer?

Read verses 40-41.  What had Jesus asked his disciples to do (38b)?  What did he find them doing when he returned?  Why was it important for them to watch and pray?  What did Jesus teach about the spirit and the body?

Read verses 42-46.  What did Jesus pray the second and third time?  What were the disciples doing?  What did Jesus say to them?  What shows that Jesus was ready to do what God wanted?
