He Wil Give You Another Helper
Key Verse
16: And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever.
Introduction:
The disciples
felt like orphans without parents. But God sent the Helper who can empower them
to live a powerful life. Our Christian life depends on how much help we can get
from the Holy Spirit. The success of our Christian life depends on the Holy
Spirit. So, it is important to know who the Holy Spirit is and how we can get
help from him.
V15-17
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
1. What does Jesus expect from those who love him? (15,21a) What does Jesus promise to those who love him? (16a) Who is the Helper, and what does the Helper do? (16b) Why
cannot the world receive the Holy Spirit, and how can we know him? (17)
Q1 A. What does Jesus expect from those who love him? (15,21a)
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.
Verse 15 is the first statement of Jesus when he begins to talk about the Holy Spirit. So
The Holy Spirit is closely related to keeping Jesus’ commandments in love. Jesus tells us that love and keeping his commandments have a close relationship.
The commandments include, but are not limited to, ‘love one another’, ‘make
disciples of all nations’, ‘deny oneself and take up his cross and follow Jesus.’
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Verse 21teaches the same
thing again. It is repeated three times in today’s passage. (v.15,21,23). It is
really emphasized. When Jesus is talking about
the coming of the Holy Spirit, what can we learn from it? How is it related to
the coming of the Holy Spirit or receiving the Holy Spirit?
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. When we are born again, we need a clear direction because we want to do something for Jesus. But we may not know what we should do very clearly.
Our love for Christ should be expressed by keeping his commandments. If we love someone, we want to do something that can please the person. That is the natural way to
love someone. Those who love Jesus really want to do something that pleases
Jesus. If someone says “I love Jesus” but does not do what Jesus wants, he or she does not love Jesus.
“You will keep my words”. To obey Jesus’ commandments is like a condition to receive the Holy Spirit, although he is a gift from God.
Christians’ mistake can be this. They can be very excited with the Holy Spirit and go away from the word of God.
John 6:36
“It is the Spirit who gives life. The flesh is no help at all. The words I have
spoken to you are spirit and life.” The best way to keep the Holy Spirit is to
keep the word of God and obey it. That is the best way to experience the work
of the Holy Spirit on a continual basis.
Q1 B. What does Jesus promise to those who love him? (16a)
16 And I will ask the Father.
He will ask the Father for those who love him and obey his commandments.
Q1 C. Who is the Helper, and what does the Helper do? (16b)
and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
The Helper is the Helper other than Jesus. He is the Holy Spirit. The Helper is to be with
those who love Jesus forever. Since the Helper will be with those who love Jesus forever, it gives such profound security. They do not need to suffer from separation anxiety or loneliness.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
V.26 shows the Helper is the Holy Spirit. Jesus will give them another Helper. He called the Holy Spirit another Helper.
Why is the Holy Spirit called “another Helper”? The Holy Spirit is to be with the disciples forever.
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,
This Helper is the Holy Spirit. Until that time, Jesus was their helper. The disciples depended on Jesus for everything such as Jesus’ power and love. They felt very secure in
Jesus. They could see Jesus could calm down storms, drove out demons, and raise
the dead. They really felt secure and strong in Jesus’ power and love. Jesus was their great helper. Nothing was too difficult for them with Jesus’ help.
Now they were losing this Helper, Jesus. But Jesus was saying God will send another Helper who has the same power and love. There is no difference between Jesus and the
Helper (Holy Spirit). Jesus’ disciples did not need to worry about anything because the Holy Spirit has exactly the same power and love as Jesus.
Some people say, “2000 years ago, the disciples were very lucky because Jesus was with
them. But we are not that lucky because Jesus is not with us.” But we have the same Helper. We need to believe that Jesus is with us now through the Holy Spirit. We have a great Helper to be with us. Jesus staye with them temporarily. But the Helper, the Helper, will be with them forever.
We need to remember this: we have this greater Helper, and this great Helper will be with us forever! We have a great Helper with us. But why do we act like we have no helper? We say, “I don’t have anyone to help me” or “No one understands me” or “I am lonely” or “I am in big trouble”. But this Helper will do exactly the same thing Jesus does.
Q1 D. Why cannot the world receive the Holy Spirit, and how can we know him? (17)
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
The world cannot receive the Holy Spirit because it neither sees him nor knows him. But
believers, those who love Jesus, can know him. The Holy Spirit dwells with them
and will be in them. It is not possible not to know him. Can we not know someone who dwells with us in our house and in us? Not possible.
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Why can't the world know the Holy Spirit? What is the difference between dwelling with them and ‘in them’? What can we learn about the Holy Spirit? The world does not know, but the disciples know. Why?
17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. “Truth” refers to “the
gospel of Jesus Christ”. The Holy Spirit will help people to understand the gospel of Jesus. The world does not accept the gospel message. Then they don’t know God at all. They don’t receive the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit comes to the people through the gospel message. The Holy Spirit comes with the truth.
“He will dwell with you and in you.” The Helper will be present with them and even
inside of them. Jesus was with them, dwelling with them. But Jesus never said to his disciples, “I am in you” or “I will be in you.” The Holy Spirit now dwells in them, and even inside of them.
Through the Holy Spirit, by receiving the Holy Spirit, they receive greater help. We talk
about ‘love’. We experience God’s love through the gospel of Jesus Christ. “You
did not know the love. But now you know the love through Jesus Christ, because
God sent his Son Jesus.” (1 John). Jesus was sacrificed on the cross. So we know what true love is. So we know God’s true love. So we love him back.
Those who really experience God’s love deeply want to love Jesus. We love Jesus and keep his commandments because of the love through his love on the cross. If we want to
do something for God, we need to come to Christ again and again, more and more.
Then, we can love him more. That is how we can love God and Jesus and obey his commands.
V18-20
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and
the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also
will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
2. What does Jesus promise? (18) How will the disciples see Jesus? (19) What does the Holy Spirit help us to know? (20)
Q2 A. What does Jesus promise? (18)
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
Jesus promises that he will come to his disciples. Although he leaves them now, he will not leave them like orphans. The relations among Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the Trinity and us is described here. Because of the Holy Spirit, there is great union.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. The coming of the Holy Spirit is Jesus’ coming. Jesus was saying, “I will come to you through the Holy Spirit.”
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. Jesus comes through the Holy Spirit. Jesus will continue the salvation work through the Holy Spirit.
Q2 B. How will the disciples see Jesus? (19)
19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
The disciples will see Jesus after he has risen from the dead. But the world will
see him no more, even after he has risen. The disciples will participate in Jesus’ resurrection through faith in Jesus.
19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. “A little while” means Jesus’ death and ascension. The
world will not see Jesus. But Jesus’ disciples will see Jesus, and because Jesus lives, they will also live.
“You will see me.” means not only Jesus’ resurrection, but also the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Q2 C. What does the Holy Spirit help us to know? (20)
20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.
The Holy Spirit helps us to know the unity among Jesus, the Father, and they. Jesus
expressed such unity, “I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.” Jesus
emphasized the complete unity between him and his disciples by saying twice, “You in me, and I in you.”
20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Jesus was resurrected. Disciples were also resurrected. “In that day I am in my Father, you in me, and I in you.” This happens when the Holy Spirit comes.
Jesus described the coming of the Holy Spirit in this way. “In that day” - the day when the
Holy Spirit comes. The Holy Spirit reveals. The Holy Spirit helps us to see and understand whatever we cannot understand.
Jesus completed the salvation work through his death and resurrection. The Holy Spirit helps us to understand it. And He makes it effective, making the salvation actually happen in each believer. The Holy Spirit applies the salvation to each believer, and they can understand their salvation in Jesus.
Disciples did not know what Jesus did. But the Holy Spirit came and helped them to understand what Jesus did. Jesus made us free from the power of sin and death. The Holy Spirit helps believers to experience the power of sin and death in their actual lives. So disciples can live powerful lives.
The Holy Spirit always comes with the word of God and the gospel message. Why is it so important to keep Jesus’ commandments? We need to align our spirit with the Holy Spirit. The best way to walk by the Holy Spirit is to walk by the word of God. Why do some people not
experience the work of the Holy Spirit? If their major concern is something else other than the word of God, then they may not experience the Holy Spirit.
What caused the Great Awakening? It is the very powerful words of God. The word of God was powerfully preached during the spiritual awakening time. There were preachers like John Wesley and Jonathan Edwards. They preached the powerful messages.
V21-24
21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
3. To whom does Jesus manifest himself? (21) What did Judas ask? (22) Why won't Jesus manifest himself to the world? (23a) How do Father and Jesus dwell with us? (23b) Why do you think Jesus emphasizes that he will manifest himself to those who love him and keep his commandments? (24)
Q3 A. To whom does Jesus manifest himself? (21)
21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
Jesus will manifest himself to those who love him by keeping his commandments. Those who obey his commandments will know Jesus the most because Jesus will manifest himself to them. Jesus will reveal himself to them.
God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are close and work together. “The Word was with God and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)
We need to understand that the Holy Spirit, the Word, and God work together. How does the word of God and the Holy Spirit work? We can see the importance of keeping the word of God.
People want to receive the Holy Spirit without the word of God. If we do not have the word
of God, we cannot receive the Holy Spirit. Why did the great revivals stop? No word of God. When people really repent, there is no follow-up, helping them to live by the word of God. So great revivals stopped.
The Holy Spirit will be with them forever as their Helper. How can they receive the help of the Holy Spirit continually? Obeying Jesus’ word out of love. Then they can receive the power of the Holy Spirit and walk with the Holy Spirit. Jesus keeps teaching. “21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. Keeping Jesus’ commandments requires a lot of effort. Those who want to obey Jesus’ commandments will come to God and ask his help in order to obey his words.
And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to
him.” When we love Jesus and keep his commandments, Jesus will manifest himself to us. So our prayer should be, “Lord, please help me to obey your commandments out of love”. The more we love Jesus and obey his commands, the more Jesus will be manifested. The Holy Spirit reveals Jesus more.
Q3 B. What did Judas ask? (22)
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
Why did he ask the question? Maybe he was thinking why Jesus should manifest himself to the world and become a popular man, and they could be popular people.
22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” Judas was implying, “Please reveal yourself to the world and they will follow you, and we will become popular too.” Jesus cannot reveal himself to everyone. Jesus manifests himself to those who accept the gospel truth and obey him.
Q3 C. Why won't Jesus manifest himself to the world? (23a)
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word
Jesus won’t manifest Himself to the world because the world does not love Him and does not keep His word.
Q3 D. How do Father and Jesus dwell with us? (23b)
and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
The Father and Jesus dwell with us when we love Jesus and keep his word. The Father and
Jesus will feel so comfortable with us when we love them and obey his words. They will make their home in us.
Q3 E. Why do you think Jesus emphasizes that he will manifest himself to those who love him and keep his commandments? (24)
24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
Verse 24 is a negative expression. It starts with “Whoever does not love me.” But verse 23 is a positive expression. It starts with “If anyone loves me”. Jesus emphasizes the same truth twice. He said it in a positive expression, “If anyone loves me.” Then he said in a negative expression, “Whoever does not love me.”
Jesus emphasizes the same truth because it is important. Believers may believe that
the Holy Spirit is just a gift given to every believer. It is true. The Holy Spirit is a gift from God. But Jesus, here, emphasizes that the Holy Spirit will be given to those who love him and obey his words.
23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.
Father and the Son will dwell together through the Holy Spirit. The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are in us. Jesus was pleased with his going. When he leaves, the disciples will become the temple. The trinity God will dwell in them. The greatest blessing. Through the Holy Spirit, the Trinity God is inside of us. But the world cannot have this blessing. Jesus is not for everyone, but for those who love and obey him.
V25-26
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
4. What does Jesus promise the Holy Spirit will do for us? (25,26) Why is it important to remember what Jesus has said to us?
Q4 A. What does Jesus promise the Holy Spirit will do for us? (25,26)
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit will do two things for his disciples in verses 25,26. (1) He
will teach them all things. “All things” is very inclusive. So the Holy Spirit is a great teacher. He is ready to teach “all things”. We should be ready to learn “all things” from him.
(2) The Holy Spirit will bring to their remembrance all that Jesus has said to them. Jesus said many things to his disciples. But they could not remember all of them because they are beyond their maturity. But the Holy Spirit will help them to remember “all” Jesus has said to them. When we remember the word of Jesus, which we do not remember, it is the work of the Holy Spirit.
Essentially, the Holy Spirit helps his disciples understand what Jesus said. In the past, they could not understand what Jesus said. Now they can understand. Through the Spirit, they could remember all Jesus said. They can enjoy the salvation of Jesus Christ. Even they can do greater work, enjoying the work of the Holy Spirit in them and others.
he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
What the Holy Spirit does is to help people receive Jesus’ words and obey his words.
But many people misunderstand the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit helps us to live by the words of Jesus.
When people do what Jesus says, it is the work of the Holy Spirit. Then they will
experience the work of the Holy Spirit and do what Jesus does. When the work of
Jesus happens, we can say, “This is the work of the Holy Spirit.”
When we pray, we should pray, “Lord, help me to obey the word of Jesus out of love.” Then he
will help us to experience the work of the Holy Spirit. We should never separate Jesus’ words from the Holy Spirit. Our prayer should be “Lord, please send me the Holy Spirit that I may know Jesus, obey his words, and do his work, and I will be like Jesus more!”
Some people always want to experience miraculous healing through the Holy Spirit. We
understand the Holy Spirit has power. So we seek him to receive the power. But the power of the Holy Spirit will be given when we obey Jesus’ words.
Q4 B. Why is it important to remember what Jesus has said to us?
What Jesus has said to us is the truth, and the life, and the way. It is the word of God
given to us. So the Bible was born. Even if someone removes all the Bibles, it will show itself again through those who will remember all Jesus has said through the work of the Holy Spirit.
V27-30
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled,
neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you,
‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have
rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29
And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you
may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
5. What is Jesus giving us? (27a) Why is it important to know that Jesus gives peace not as the world gives? (27b) What is different about the peace the world gives and the peace that Jesus gives?
Q5 A. What is Jesus giving us? (27a)
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Jesus knows his disciples need peace the most at that moment. So he said, “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you.” Jesus promised he would leave peace with them. Furthermore, it is his own peace. He leaves his own peace to his disciples. So they could enjoy Jesus’ peace, which transcends all understanding.
Q5 B. Why is it important to know that Jesus gives peace not as the world gives? (27b)
Not as the world gives do I give to you. The world gives peace on a conditional basis. But Jesus does not give his peace on an unconditional basis. Jesus’ peace is not conditional. Jesus wanted his disciples to seek peace from him. The real present peace was given by Jesus.
His disciples can enjoy the same peace as Jesus. Jesus’ peace is the evidence of
the Holy Spirit’s presence in his disciples. Peace in the world depends on outward conditions.
Q5 C. What is different about the peace the world gives and the peace that Jesus gives?
Jesus’ peace is not limited by conditions or circumstances.
6. Why should the disciples be glad (28)? Why did Jesus tell them these things (29)? Why did the prince of this world have no hold over Jesus (30-31)?
Q6 A. Why should the disciples be glad (28)?
28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
The disciples should be glad because Jesus is going to the Father, who is greater than he.
“for the Father is greater than I” Jesus will be restored to his full glory through his death, resurrection, and ascension. So disciples should be glad. And he will send the Holy Spirit through his departure. Great thanks topics.
Q6 B. Why did Jesus tell them these things (29)?
29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe.
Jesus told them these things (His death and resurrection, the coming of the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ peace, etc) so that they might believe Jesus when they happened. It is to increase their faith.
And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. Jesus talks about the Holy Spirit. (I have told you this before). Without hearing this from Jesus, they would be very confused when the Holy Spirit comes to them. Now they would really believe that the Holy Spirit will come as Jesus said.
Q6 C. Why did the prince of this world have no hold over Jesus (30-31)?
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
The prince of this world has no hold over Jesus because Jesus is not obeying the prince but
the Father. He loves the Father and obeys him. On the cross, Jesus obeys his Father. It is not obeying the prince of this world. So the prince of this world can have no claim on Jesus.
30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, Jesus will not die because of his sin or anything. Jesus was dying voluntarily. Even though it happens through the evil work of the ruler of this world, he would not die, not because of Satan’s work.
Here, Jesus showed a good example of how he loved his Father. Through obeying his commands, which is death.
In conclusion, through Jesus’ death and resurrection, through the gospel, God sent another Helper, the greatest Helper, the perfect Helper, and the mightiest Helper. Just as the disciples depended on Jesus, we can rely and depend on this Helper for everything.
We can expect the same help from the Holy Spirit, the same help that we can expect from Jesus.
We may experience God, Jesus, the Spirit, and Jesus’ salvation work through the Holy Spirit. We need to think about the Holy Spirit and live by Him
